WWII Veterans “Breach” The Barriers At The WWII Memorial In DC, After Park Service Closes Due To Shutdown

WWII Veterans who made an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial, were told Tuesday morning that they could not visit due to the Government shutdown. Since the Government shutdown at midnight last night, National Park Service employee’s were put on furlough, so they had no one to work at the memorial. Park service workers showed up early Tuesday morning and erected orange barricades around the memorial and blocked the entrances.

According to a CNN Report:

Busloads of World War II veterans, many in wheelchairs, broke past a barricade Tuesday to cross into the World War II Memorial, as onlookers applauded and a man playing the bagpipes led the way.

Moments earlier, Republican members of Congress had removed a section of the black gates that surrounded the site, allowing a line of veterans to roll past security officers, who willingly stood aside.

A spokeswoman from the Park Service said efforts were no longer being made to hold anyone back, and security officers could easily be seen standing aside.

“These are important visitors,” she told reporters, adding that they’re seeking guidance from the director’s office on “where we go next.”

Some Republican members of Congress and a Democratic senator were on site, blasting the federal government for fencing off the memorial. Outraged and baffled, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, crossed through an opening in the fenced-off area earlier in the morning-before the breach–and got on the phone to try and reach the secretary of the Department of Interior.

“I don’t get it. I’m furious. I’m trying to get a hold of people,” he said, standing on the other side of the barricade and looking around for help. “But I can’t seem to get a hold of anybody.”

Some of these guys may be older, but do not stand in their way!!! These are the men who stormed the beaches of Normandy, raised the flag on Iwo Jima,  and dug into the sand on Guadalcanal!!!! These men are not to be messed with, and surely a couple of orange barriers will not hold these great men back!!

Let these men visit the site that shows homage to what they have done for us!

Witnesses said that the Park workers that were on duty had at first tried to stop the Veterans from entering the memorial. Until several Veterans marched forward, with a bag pipe player leading the way and pushed the barricades aside.

Once this happened everyone else followed, the Park employees no longer tried stopping them!

People started tweeting pictures of the Veterans breaching the barricades:

A large crowd began to gather prior to the Veterans breaching the barriers, and once they did the crowd erupted into applause!

These guys are the greatest generation, they fought evil incarnate, who are we to tell them they can not visit their memorial? They won the second World War, they don’t need your supervision to visit the memorial, as you can see by the breach, they can handle themselves!!!

  1. Wow, you’re right on top of this. I JUST posted it to a couple of military sites myself. Waht “we” need now is another Rolling Thudner from RVN veterans that will walk to The Wall.

  2. These men should have been escorted in instead of having to force their way! My grandfather would have been there pushing his way through as well had he not just recently passed away. He wouldn’t have stood for this!

  3. Having been to the Memorial when it was “open”, I know bloody damned well that there are no regular staff stationed there and it would take a special effort to “close” it to foot traffic, which is how it is designed to be seen. That is a planned punishment from the most corrupt administration this country has ever known to bully and intimidate people into going along with what they want.

        • Another person ignoring the facts, Obama administration bringing this country to ruin? Is that Tea Bag covering your entire head and making you blind!

          • Thery all share responsibility. It goes back a few years when the first budgt “didjn’t happen”. At that point, the government should have been shut down, the Congress seuestere unil they did pass a budget and no more CRs. This entire folly was competely unnecessary and it’s not a single person’s or a single party’s fault.

We get what we vote for and returning the same people to Congress over and over again, expecting a different result is the defnition of insanity.

Voter partisanship just feeds into the these elected official’s scheme to acquire more power and validate their purpose in life.

  4. I went through the shutdown in 1995 as a DoD employee. We were told NOT to come to work. Many of us stated we would volunteer our time but were refused. Seems Congress did not want people working volunteer or not, to maximize the hurt on the public and hopefully shift the blame to the other political party.

    • And that is what Obama is doing right now…he told the “custodians” of our National Monuments to”make it hurt”…talk about the “Obstruct-or in Chief”..Worst “president” and most corrupt this Nation has ever had the displeasure to have in office…

      • The most corrupt president this nation has known? Are you that uneducated and blind to history or just a typical narrow minded citizen who can’t get over the fact you lost an election. Do you have any knowledge of Grant, Harding, Nixon, or G.W. Bush? Do me a favor, try reading a book on either of these presidents and then let me know if Obama was the worst president. Don’t let the facts get in the way.

  5. “Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, crossed through an opening in the fenced-off area earlier in the morning-before the breach–and got on the phone to try and reach the secretary of the Department of Interior.

‘I don’t get it. I’m furious. I’m trying to get a hold of people,’ he said, standing on the other side of the barricade and looking around for help. ‘But I can’t seem to get a hold of anybody.'”

    — Um, Senator… maybe their jobs have been shut down.

  6. Perfect analogy of our current gov’t vs The People”
This is what the gov’t really thinks of the people, and especially the people who protect us, our land and our gov’t?!
Well, this is what the people think of the gov’t – break down the barricades!!!

  7. I have and always will look up to these great men and women. They forged forward through tyranny to allow us the opportunity to live our way of life. I’m proud to say I followed in there their footsteps. They have my eternal thanks and respect.

    • If the park was open as normal the bag pipe player would have been there but more than likely not 3 senators. I was there last year when the WWll guys came and they did almost the same thing less the senators…

    • The only thing out of normal was the senators..the bag pipe is a norm for the time period of that war. Soo..you say fishy? I say you dont know history.

  8. It is a shame that our veterans still have to fight and now it’s our own government. I am proud of those vets for standing up for what is right and just.

  9. Kind of points out the glaring fact that we don’t don’t government supervision for a lot of things we do. Liberty is ours if we will do what these veterans did and, en masse, walk through the barriers in Congress and make them represent us.

  10. We the F*** weren’t the Senators back at the office trying to open the “government”? Seems there to busy getting publicity.

  11. I’ve had one Hell of a Day myself, while it has nothing to do with the “Republicans / Tea Bagers Holding the Country Hostage” (can anyone even believe that BS is being broadcast?) but THIS Story made my Day!!

Thanks to the people willing to do what’s right – I may just file a complaint that Federal Workers came out while on Furlough to inflict Emotional Harm and Damage to a large group of Veterans!

      • Julie, either you ahve four legs and eats small animals or you play for the University of Wisconsin! So who is at fault for ignoring a law that has passed through the Supreme Court and now is being implimented and who has decided to take all of their toys home and shut down the government. Let me guess…it was that one guy in the White House that shut down OUR government. Get your head out of that tea bag and look at the facts.

  12. They stood together at the invasion beaches in the Atlantic and the Pacific and prevailed what better way to see them unite again and prevail this may not be tyranny but injustice is injustice . I think they all did something great here they showed that they could still unite and fight for what is right then and now want a great government darn shame they couldn’t all be voted into office Nation wide.

  13. God knows exactly what He is doing…We may not understand…on the other hand it is not our purpose to understand (Proverbs 3:5-6)just what God is doing…we just need to TRUST in Him. If we could just take a minute and truly look at it, the Lord continues to slowly lift the hedge of protetion that He has had on this nation. As we continue to push ourselves (as a nation; not individually)and our nations practices and policies away from the principles in which this wonderful country was founded on (In God We Trust)we will continue to experience suffering and hard times. If we want these things to stop and we want to recover from this SNAFU…we must humble ourselves, as a nation, and pray to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is faithful to provide us with all of our needs according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus. Praise the Lord for our current situation. He will supply our every need. We just must pray and humble ourselves…GET ON YOUR KNEES and see that the Lord is FAITHFUL to provide….

  14. Oh yes, ALL of the repubs kept their offices open, answered calls, and worked. Not ONE democrat did that, instead playing games and hurting veterans, soldiers, and their families. Screw the left.

  15. Bob, I agree as well. And who controlled BOTH houses and the WH then? Yup, barry, harry, and nancy. Obama has not passed one budget, only cr’s.
