Ted Turner, Founder of CNN, Said Military Suicides Outnumbering Combat Deaths Is Good

Ted Turner

Suicides in the MIlitary are at an all time high, with multiple deployments, ending relationships among other issues our Soldiers are dealing with, in one of the longest wars. And it is taking its toll, and we owe it to our brothers and sisters to be on constant watch and look out for their well-being. And someone like Ted Turner has the nerve to say that he is glad suicides are outnumbering combat deaths.  Here is what he said:

MORGAN: You made the point to me in the break there, more American servicemen have-

TURNER: — are dying now from suicide over there than are dying in combat.

MORGAN: That’s shocking, isn’t it?

TURNER: Well, what — no, I think it’s — I think it’s good

When asked why, he said

“because it’s so clear that we’re programmed and we’re born to love and help each other, not to kill each other, to destroy each other. That’s an aberration. That’s left over from hundreds of years ago. It’s time for to us start acting enlightened.”

This coming from someone who has built his fortune on the backs of those that protect his freedom to do so. But I mean he was married to “Hanoi” Jane Fonda at one point, I guess she has rubbed off on him.

Mr. Turner, you can count me out on watching anything your hands have touched, including CNN. I used to respect you for making what you have of the American dream, but for you to go and say something like that about my brothers and sisters in arms in unforgivable  I have personally dealt with a Soldier committing suicide, and it will always be with me. So you sir, are no longer welcome in my home through my TV, nor is anything you have had any part in creating.

Here is the video of the interview with Piers Morgan, the part about the Suicides starts at about 1:40.

  1. I feel he really didn’t mean to put it in the context he did. Honestly, I feel as if he meant to say that it’s good that we’re having fewer combat deaths. Hopefully this will be addressed though, because if he meant what he said – I won’t be happy

  2. Watch and listen to what he has to say first. You’ll understand. He could have said that a different way. I do see what he was getting at. MOST people aren’t inherintly wired to kill others, it is an unnatural act. But it is bringing more attention to the stresses on our Troops with the multiple deployments, relationships, Families ect. I seen it in Iraq. We had a SGT. that deserted when he came home on R&R cause his wife was cheating and treating his kids bad. Had another soldier put on suicide watch cause his wife was raped and sence he had been home on R&R all ready he couldn’t come home cause the command didn’t think it was that much of a family energency. Sending a widowed father to a combat zone to begin with and then out side the wire for a month. Basicly any thing short of someone’s spouse being murdered (Yes we even had that happen and that soldier was sent home) or a soldiers brother being killed in action and they were both in Iraq at the same time (that soldier was sent home as well) the command didn’t care.

  3. First I have been doing this for some bit of time. I have never seen a command that anything could happen back home and they didn’t care. So please stop using the forum about the Turner issue to resolve your own with thinking the military does every one wrong. Second I listened to it. It seems to me that he is happy we are killing ourselves becuase we (to him) are not wired to kill. And it it a good thing that we are killing ourselves for him to find this out. Here is my two cents. Ted turner doesn’t live in what we like to call reality, he lives in lala land. Anyone and I mean anyone that ever says that the deaths of my Soldiers, Friends , and Brothers is in any way, shape, form, or fashion a good thing should be deported to Iran. In his pocket they should find a sketch to the Iatollahs house and a Gun. Get the point, By the way I am not wishing death upon him just deportation.

  4. The atrocity here isn’t that he said it was “good”. The atrocity is that they’d cover Ted Turner saying something like that in a bad light and not cover the VA who continues to neglect so many who need help. They force us to fight tooth and nail for years for benefits when a person who is lazy is easily given welfare, a cell phone, and food stamps. Priorities are out of whack.

  5. There are messages where the context of a statement was confused by a conversation. Soldiers committing suicide is not coffee table discussion, and the reality is that Ted Turner has no idea what he’s talking about. The fact of the matter is that people are not enlightened, and since the dawn of time man has been wired to accept the realities of killing. I think you’ll find the issue is that the PC monsters created by people like Mr. Turner cause a good amount of young people to feel guilty about their personal displays of aggression. Being guilted by people like him are where the downward spiral begins for a great number of us.
