Remesa Buemer Sentenced To 5 Years In Prison For Stealing Veterans Identities And Tax Refund Fraud

Remesa Buemer was sentenced to 5 years in prison and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $492,039.60 for filing tax returns in the names of people who did not give her permission and receiving fraudulent tax refunds on prepaid debit cards.

The scheme was uncovered on Sept. 15, 2011, when Buemer called Tampa police to report a break-in at her apartment. During that investigation, officers found notebooks containing names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and other markings, as well as patient records from a medical facility run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and 23 prepaid debit cards.

Investigators were able to find one victim from the VA list who had a tax return filed in his name. Prosecutors said the victim did not know Buemer and did not give her permission to file a tax return on his behalf. Buemer had a prepaid debit card worth more than $9,000 in the victim’s name mailed to her grandmother’s house, prosecutors said.

I have two questions concerning this case, first after we did some research we found Remesa has a lengthy criminal background which we will post below, so how did she have access to Veterans records at the VA?

Second, If she was working for the VA, did they not do a background check before hiring her? I mean according to news reports she was arrested previously for being involved in a sophisticated shoplifting ring, not to mention several battery charges.

Here is what we found just in the Tampa area, since she graduated high school:

According to court records, The Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Tampa police investigated the case. But I can not seem to find any mention of her working for the VA, and if someone else had stolen the records I am sure they would have been indicted as well.

Here is a link to a story where she was arrested as part of the shoplifting ring:Women May Be Part Of Shoplifting Ring

And here is a link to the court release of her sentencing: Press Release

To me this case has left a few unanswered questions, if we find out anymore we will let you know.
